Secondary - For Parents
In the quest to incorporate knowledge about epilepsy and seizure disorders into secondary school education, the Epilepsy Support Centre has developed “Brain Matters: An Introduction to Neuroscience”. A comprehensive textbook targeted at grade 12 biology students that examines the field of Neuroscience and uses seizure disorders as a way to examine how our own neurological network operates. Through this unit, students will learn about epilepsy, what can trigger seizures, and how to respond if you see someone having a seizure. This textbook has been endorsed by all school boards in our coverage area, and will shortly be implemented across Canada and the United States. We also offer science and health related presentations for any grade or staff, focusing on the human brain and how it operates with the various body systems. We then illustrate what causes seizures, what is classified as epilepsy, brain and epilepsy correlative traits, the effect of anti-seizure medication and seizure first aid.
Our comprehensive secondary school programming is always well received and a nice addition to any health or science lesson, or staff meeting. Ultimately it is our goal to educate the community of a person with epilepsy in a secondary school setting so they can feel more comfortable around their peers and teachers.
If you’re interested in what our agency can do for you or your child, suggest to your child’s teacher to have us in their school or classroom.
