Elementary - For Teachers

The Epilepsy Support Centre has developed “Thinking About Epilepsy” a program geared specifically for grade 5 students to teach them about epilepsy, seizure first aid, and the human body.

The purpose of this program is to educate children, dispelling myths about epilepsy, and making school a more accepting and comfortable place for those affected by a seizure disorder.

The most unique aspect of our “Thinking About Epilepsy” program is that is has been designed to correlate to the Ontario Science Curriculum. Our program addresses 7 of the direct expectations regarding:

  • Choices students make about their bodies can have long term impacts and affects, both positive and negative.
  • The body is composed of a number of systems, which are composed by a number of organs, each organ can affect a system, and each system can affect the body.
  • Organ structures are linked to their functions.
  • Systems in the human body work together to meet our basic needs.
  • Recognizing the positive and negative environmental and social factors on human health.
  • Recognizing and following established safety practices for physical activities.
  • Identifying common diseases and disorders, as well as the organs or body systems they affect.

Our program addresses all of these curriculum expectations, and yet is still an extremely entertaining and engaging experience for your students. After seeing our presentation 97% of all teachers agreed that:

  • The facilitator maintained the students attention..
  • The program aligned with the Ontario Curriculum.
  • Their students would know what to do if they saw someone have a seizure.
  • They would know what to do if they saw someone have a seizure.
  • The presentation helped them to recognize different seizure types
  • The presentation made them feel more comfortable supporting a child with epilepsy.
  • They would have another Thinking About Epilepsy presentation in their classroom.

We also offer Teacher-In-Services where we’ll educate school staff on epilepsy, seizure first aid, learning strategies, the side affects of medication and behavioral traits.
